Featured Photo Shoot
More often than not, while showing my photographs, I find myself
recounting tales of how I captured the image in question or about
the subject of that particular photograph. The telling of the photos
tale adds a dimension to an otherwise flat, although not quite
silent form of communication.
With this in mind I will occasionally feature a photo or group of
photo’s here on this page and give you the inside story.

Trumpet Player
A friend of mine back
in 2001 was able to get me into a trendy Boulder bar on Halloween
night to shoot photos of the wildly costumed patrons and attempt to
sell them prints made by my hastily purchased “speedy” printers. I
shot some wonderful photos and made some fast prints, but I came to
the conclusion that night that I wouldn’t make my fortune shooting
photos of drunk people in a bar. All but one of the printers made it
back to the store shelves within a week.
This is a photo of the trumpet player that was in the incredible
band playing that night. I had a studio strobe with a red gel and an
umbrella in the back of the room for colorful background lighting,
and I was using my on camera flash to illuminate the faces of my
subjects to maintain proper skin tones and exposure. The effect is
that the subject is the right color, while everything around them is
red. This image was made by turning off the on camera flash so that
all that’s captured is the deep red light from the background
strobe. I boosted the contrast in PhotoShop a little bit and that’s
it.
